SMADA

Stormwater Management and Design Aid — free hydrology software for students and engineers.

What it is

SMADA computes watershed runoff, time of concentration, design storms and runoff hydrographs. It sizes channels and pipes, and fits frequency distributions to extremes.

Every result names its method, the formula and its source. It runs entirely on your computer. SMADA goes with the textbook Hydrology: Water Quantity and Quality Control (Wanielista, Kersten and Eaglin); this is a new version, rebuilt for today’s Windows.

SMADA is not on the Microsoft Store yet. This page will link to it when it is. Email Dr. Eaglin to be told when it is out.

What you can do

  • Design storms from dimensionless rainfall curves, with the hyetograph and mass curve.
  • SCS/NRCS curve-number runoff (TR-55), Horton infiltration and the rational method.
  • Time of concentration by seven formulas, side by side.
  • Unit hydrographs (SCS, triangular, Clark, rational, S-curve) and convolution.
  • Manning open-channel flow for compound or irregular sections, pipe flow, head loss and the energy equation.
  • Regression on six forms, and frequency analysis by seven distributions.
  • Reports as text, HTML or PDF, plots, and CSV. Units convert throughout.

Who it is for

Hydrology and water-resources students, and practising engineers.
